Lathrop Homes - Background Info

Here's some background on the fight to preserve Lathrop Homes as public and affordable housing.

NO MARKET RATE!

Lathrop Homes is a historic public housing development located at Diversey, Damen, and Clybourn. It was built during the New Deal and consists of 925 low-rise units spread over 37 acres. In addition to providing homes for poor and working class households, Lathrop Homes is also home to the Cotter Boys and Girls Club and the Mary Crane Center.

Early on in the Plan for Transformation, the CHA stated that: "About 30 percent of the units redeveloped at Lathrop and LeClaire are expected to be reserved for tax-credit families and the rest for traditional public housing." (CHA 2000, p. 10) (Note: LeClaire was a public housing development near Midway Airport.)

A lot has changed since 2000. The CHA is now saying that traditional public housing will make up a maximum of one-third of the units at Lathrop Homes. (CHA 2010, p. 7)

The battle is still on regarding the future of Lathrop Homes. Here are some additional sources about recent developments there:
